The R-BREEZE provides partial rain protection at the fixed slat angle but does not seal against precipitation the way the R-BLADE when closed or the R-SHADE do. At 55 degrees, the slats shed moderate rain reasonably well in a static rain event. In wind-driven rain or sustained Pacific Northwest rain events, water will reach the space below. The R-BREEZE is better suited for shade and airflow management than full rain protection. Homeowners who want to stay dry in October rain under their pergola will find the R-BLADE a better specification. Homeowners who primarily want a defined shade element for summer afternoon sun and are not relying on the structure for weather protection will find the R-BREEZE appropriate. Yes — most pergola installations in Washington State require a building permit regardless of whether the system is motorized or fixed. The R-BREEZE is a permanent attached or freestanding structure that meets the size and attachment thresholds for permit requirements in most Puget Sound jurisdictions. Yes — the R-SHADE's sandwich panel construction includes an insulating core that provides thermal resistance in both directions. In summer, the insulated panels reduce radiant heat gain from the sun into the space below — the covered area stays cooler than it would under a non-insulated metal roof. In cooler months, the insulated roof retains heat generated by infrared heaters or occupants more effectively than a non-insulated covering would. The insulation performance is not equivalent to interior ceiling insulation, but it is a meaningful improvement over non-insulated aluminum panel systems or louvered systems at equivalent outdoor temperatures. For homeowners adding infrared heaters to the covered space, the R-SHADE's insulation properties improve the effective warmth of the heating system by reducing heat loss through the overhead surface.
Azenco R-BLADE louvers close automatically in rain through integrated weather sensors that detect moisture and signal the motor to close the louvers. When the louvers are closed, water is channeled through fully integrated gutters built into each structural post and drains to the ground at the base invisibly. This is a specific engineering advantage over competing louvered pergola systems that use S-shaped or curved louvers. Those designs pool water in the trough of the louver curve. When the louvers open after rain, the pooled water splashes onto anyone below. The R-BLADE's flat louver profile sheds water rather than pooling it, and drainage is managed entirely within the post system. The K-BANA is generally priced lower than the R-BLADE because the motor system, weather sensors, control electronics, and motorization components are not present.
