Wood decks in this climate require consistent sealing, staining, and board replacement. Most composite boards solve the wood problem but create a new one on shaded lots. Those-sided composite boards leave the bottom face exposed, and in low-clearance, shaded Pacific Northwest builds, that uncapped face develops mold within a few years.

Generic cable railing uses standard 304 stainless steel. In Puget Sound salt air zones, 304 corrodes at the cable ends within a few seasons. FSI specifies Maisy Railing with 316 marine-grade stainless cable because it is the correct spec for coastal and waterfront properties.
For glass railing, FSI installs RDI's Avalon series. Tempered glass panels sit inside integrated aluminum rail gaskets with no external mechanical clips. Clean lines, no hardware breaking up the panel face, code-compliant for Bellevue and Redmond's 42-inch minimum.

TimberTech composite decking does not rot, splinter, crack, or require annual sealing or staining the way wood decking does. In the Pacific Northwest, where a deck surface sees moisture for eight to nine months of the year, the maintenance gap between wood and composite is significant. A wood deck requires annual cleaning, periodic sealing, and board replacement as the material degrades. TimberTech composite requires only occasional cleaning and holds its surface texture, color, and structural integrity through the wet-climate cycle. TimberTech's Advanced PVC line carries a 30-year limited warranty covering fade, stain, and material performance. The material also resists mold and mildew growth, a real concern on shaded deck surfaces in this climate. The initial cost of composite is higher than pressure-treated wood. Over a ten-to-fifteen-year period when maintenance costs and eventual board replacement are factored in, composite typically reaches cost parity or better.
FSI installs Maisy and RDI railing systems in aluminum, cable, and glass configurations. Aluminum railing systems are the most durable and lowest maintenance option in a wet climate. Cable railing preserves views where the deck overlooks a yard, water feature, or natural area. Glass railing provides the most open visual experience and complements modern home architecture. Each option has different maintenance requirements, code compliance considerations for baluster spacing, and structural load implications for the deck framing. FSI recommends the right railing system after reviewing the deck design, the home's architectural style, and the homeowner's maintenance preferences. All railing systems installed by FSI meet Washington State residential building code requirements for height and load resistance.
